Hello, welcome to my website. My name is Phil Grundy and I'm a multimedia designer based in London. My primary skills lie in print design but I also dabble in 3D modelling, web design and motion graphics. I am available for freelance work, if you are interested in what I can do
please feel free to contact me.
I was born in 1981 in the brewing capital of the UK, Burton-on-Trent, East Staffordshire.
My favourite subject at school was Art & Design, with my main skills lying in
pencil drawing, painting and graphics.

After school I was eager to get into the world of work and at 18 years of age I secured a job at my local newspaper in the busy Pre-Press Department. I started working in the Imaging section of the department where I was first introduced to Photoshop. I then progressed into the Typesetting area of the newspaper and developed layout skills in Quark Xpress, InDesign and Illustrator.

At 22 I decided to compliment my work based knowledge with a degree in Graphic Image Making at Southampton Solent University. A great course which covered print design, motion graphics, video, 3D modelling and animation, sound recording and web design.

For more information please browse through my CV.

I currently work for The Telegraph Media Group as a Senior Production Executive in the
Advertising Production Department, a position I've held since September 2007.

In my free time when I’m not perched in front of my pride and joy (27” iMac) I enjoy eating out, playing snooker, watching football, socialising, film (I’m a Sci-Fi geek), music, documentaries, technology and fashion. I also have an addiction to wristwatches.

FINAL MAJOR PROJECT.
BA Hon's Graphic Image Making.

For my final major project I wanted to utilise all the skills I had developed during the 3 years of my degree, mainly illustration and motion. I chose a relevant topic that I was passionate about; endangered species, particularly the 12 species at the time that were considered by the WWF to be the most critically endangered. I produced all the illustrations myself along with the 3D work and animation.

LEVEL 2, 3D ANIMATION.
BA Hon's Graphic Image Making.

During the second year of my degree I began to learn 3D modelling and animation. This was my first project in the subject. The brief was simple; choose any logo or label and animate it in a 3D space. This project was a massive learning curve in terms of rendering times and what my poor PC could cope with! The film was animated in one continuous take and took around 3 days to render on a 2.7GHZ PC with 1GB RAM.

LEVEL 2, 3D ANIMATION.
BA Hon's Graphic Image Making.

The brief for my second 3D animation project was to design a title sequence for a fictional science fiction film called "Deformity". Although every scene for each cast and crew member is the same visually it was a massive task to complete as each individual letter of every name and word had to be animated separately. As each scene contains different words the shadows and lighting when the characters move help to create different effects in each scene.

FREELANCE PROJECT.
July 2007.

I literally had to model and produce this is one night. A designer friend of mine had built a website for an online company called Cherry Mobile. They wanted their logo modelled in 3D with a map of the Earth transferred onto the cherry, they also wanted the cherry or camera to turn in one rotation. I was called upon to produce this for the following day. I was still a 3D novice at this point so it was quite a challenge to create this in a few hours.

LEVEL 2, MOTION GRAPHICS.
BA Hon's Graphic Image Making.

This project was the first to be set during the second year of my degree. The first year had focused on static imagery and illustration, I was now being taught how to make images move. The brief for my first motion piece was fairly simple; to create a visual delight by animating a series of unlimited dots in Flash with audio.

FREELANCE PROJECT.
August 2010.

I was commissioned by Ripple Primary School in Barking, East London to completely redesign and rebuild their website. Their existing site was basic and very dated with no structure to the layout and no design elements at all. A few animated gifs dotted around with some clip art graphics thrown in for good measure was about as far as any creativity went!

My main web experience before this project had been the creation of my portfolio website in Flash. This site had gone through 4 or 5 incarnations during the past 4 years so my skills in Flash were fairly competent. For Ripples website I wanted to build a static site in HTML so Dreamweaver was my tool of choice.

I wanted to produce a simple site that was easy to update by the school's IT staff but that was also aesthetically pleasing to the eye of the user. I began doodling school related images to use as a background for the sites template and worked on my layout. I produced several similar mockups experimenting with different colours and layouts in Photoshop. I presented the visuals to the school and they picked their favourite. I then began to construct the site in Dreamweaver.

I am pleased to say that the site was extremely well received by both staff and pupils. The website is now maintained and updated by Ripple Primary School's IT department on a regular basis, therefore much of the original page content has changed but the design and layout remains the same.

This project was a great challenge for me as it re-introduced me to HTML site design after a 6 year absence and helped me develop my existing skills in Dreamweaver. It also prompted me to rebuild my Flash portfolio site in HTML which you are currently viewing. I believe Flash to be a great program but limited in reaching the end user in today's world of tablets and smart phones.
